Ribbon bed

Inspired by the iconic Eames LCW chair, made of molded plywood, I envisioned a continuous ribbon of wood that would encourage feelings of floating while sleeping. As a person in a 6’4” body, I’ve always found footboards and headboards too restrictive — claustrophobic, even. So I shared inspiration and conditions with a RISD industrial designer, Erik Askin, and we volleyed some ideas back and forth, ultimately commissioning his sketches.

Many years later, I brought the sketches to Nick, founder of Green Piece Furniture, previously located on Treasure Island in San Francisco. We agreed on a price to construct the beta version of the bed, and I visited several times to see the work in progress and document molding the plywood and adding the walnut veneer.

Now that I’ve been sleeping on the v1 prototype since Summer 2016, and enjoy its smooth lines, I have a few notions about improving the v2… which I’ll be working on Fall 2026. I’d be delighted to talk with a wholesaler about mass manufacture, wink.
